Boats and Jaunty Carts

Greetings from Dublin via the Gap of Dunloe.

This morning we left Cahersiveen and headed toward Killarny to have a boat ride.  We were dropped off at Ross Castle and fit into a small boat and taken 14 miles through two rivers and three lakes.  It was very beautiful but the kids did not like it much.  Most of them were bored out of their minds and almost fell asleep.  Tracie and I loved it.  It's so beautiful here!

When we got off the boats we had lunch at Lord Brandon's cottage and then climbed aboard the jaunty carts for our 7 mile ride through the Gap of Dunloe.  The Gap is a natural pass through the mountains that people have used for centuries.  Our delegation went 4 to a cart plus a driver.  The carts are TINY....there was no room to put your legs.

The Gap is beautiful....very rugged and steep terrain.  Apparently Ireland is very dry right now, so the lakes at the bottom are much lower than they usually are.

After the ride was over, we climbed back on the bus for the 4 hour ride back to Dublin.  Tomorrow, we explore Dublin Town.

Also, this was the headline on the Kerry newspaper this morning.  Apparently, a pub owner in Waterville, the next town on the Ring of Kerry from Cahersiveen, posted a sign in his pub window that says "No bus/ no coaches no loud Americans". The people in Kerry were appalled, and went out of their way to make sure that the Americans felt welcome. We were in the bathroom at the mall in Killarney when a little old lady asked me if I was American.  I said yes, and she patted my arm and said "I'm sorry."  I am pretty sure that she was talking about the article in the paper because of the tone of her voice.  At least, that's what I'm telling myself.
